Dr. Lynn Helena Caporale

Dr. Lynn Helena Caporale was born at New York Hospital, received her BS with Honors in Chemistry from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley. As a graduate student, she lived in International House, where she had the opportunity to live with people from over 60 countries around the world, forming life-long friendships and gaining a perspective on how other countries view the United Statesą role in the world [we judge ourselves by our intentions, others judge us by the events triggered by our actions], and was a delegate to the 1972 Democratic Presidential Nominating convention.

Dr. Caporale did postdoctoral research studying the immune response, leukemia, and the relationship between the structure and inflammatory activity of a peptide that triggers the release of histamine, before joining the biochemistry faculty of Georgetown University Medical School, where she taught medical, dental and graduate students. It was at Georgetown that she first began to think deeply about evolution, which eventually led her to write Darwin in the Genome.

From Georgetown, Dr. Caporale moved to Merck Research Laboratories, where she spent over a decade focused on the discovery of new medicines, She has held research and senior executive positions with various biotechnology companies and in the pharmaceutical industry, and currently is an independent consultant in drug discovery and functional genomics. She lives in New York City.
